Senior Lecturer
Biography
Following an undergraduate degree in geology from the Open University (UK), I undertook a PhD at the University of Otago, New Zealand, studying early Miocene environmental change using the physical and magnetic properties of lake sediments. I worked in industry for a year after completing my PhD, then took up a lecturership then senior lectureship in Sedimentary Geology at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. In 2018 I moved to the University of Huddersfield as a founding member of their Geography programme, and in 2025 I took up a Senior Lectureship in Geography at the Â׸£ÀûƬ.
Areas of Research
I have wide-ranging research interests including the following:
Palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment
Geomorphological evolution of coastal dunes and river systems
Karst and cave science
Applications of environmental magnetism and X-ray CT to geological and geomorphological systems
Geoethics and questions of ethics in geoscientific activity
Geodiversity, geoheritage and geoconservation
Social relationships to the geological world
Inclusion and belonging in geoscience
I teach on a range of modules including:
-Applied Skills and Field Course
-Academic Tutorial
-Earth Surface Processes
-Global Rivers in a Changing Climate
-Research Design and Delivery
-Professional Practice
I also supervise dissertations for Undergraduate and MSc (taught) students as well as PGRs on MRes and PhD programmes.
