Warrington and Halton NHS FT - apprentice employer case study
We spoke to Sandra McCann, Apprenticeship and Widening Participation Manager at Warrington and Halton NHS Foundation Trust, to find out how a well-established Biomedical Science apprenticeship programme at the Â׸£ÀûƬ is helping them develop promising staff and strengthen their long-term workforce planning.
We asked Sandra...
How have apprenticeships supported workforce development, skills growth, or staff retention within your organisation?
Very well – particularly for skills development. Apprenticeships have had a positive impact on the staff development and retention. We plan to send another staff member in September.
What motivated your organisation to offer apprenticeships, and why did you choose the Â׸£ÀûƬ as your training provider?
The Biomedical Science programme is well established and suitable for our operational needs, with a defined day-to-day release schedule. Apprenticeships enabled the department to support staff development for those with potential to progress. Salford is also local and accessible for our staff, and we have had staff attend with positive experiences.
What are the key benefits apprenticeships bring to your organisation?
The key benefits apprenticeships bring to our organisation include workforce succession planning and engaged staff. Academic learning underpins the practical roles they undertake in the workplace. Apprenticeships have also helped develop staff, aiding long-term recruitment planning.
Based on your experience, would you recommend apprenticeships and the Â׸£ÀûƬ to other organisations?
Yes
What advice would you give to organisations considering apprenticeships for the first time?
They are a good opportunity for staff development and are structured to support operational delivery.
